A painting with a few bricks on a wooden floor—it is hard to imagine that a good work could emerge from that. It is often said of Henk Helmantel that he is capable of bringing inanimate objects to life. The work with the monastery bricks is a good example of this. An incredible amount is happening within the stones and the floor. It is a palette of colors and layers that you keep looking at. Just as you can become mesmerized by the stones in a medieval building, these monastery bricks also continue to draw attention.
