Henk Helmantel writes in one of his books about his fondness for the architecture of medieval buildings: “They have a special balance in their proportions, walls with round or pointed arches, white-plastered walls, not too many windows. In this way, an atmosphere was created that has actually never been equaled since. As a painter, I find it incredibly fascinating to respond to that.” And so it is said, this work is Henk’s response to one of the oldest churches in Germany (959 AD) https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stiftskerk_Sint-Cyriacus_(Gernrode)
