De Weem in Westeremden is a unique place to stay. Henk Helmantel has created a number of paintings of his own living and working space/museum. The soft light creates a serene atmosphere. The red chair, painted with razor-sharp precision, adds depth. The work gains further tension from the left window—which makes you, as a viewer, want to look outside—and the chair that is not quite fully depicted. Those who look longer will see how playfully the whole is created and how much is happening within the wall.
