The demand for still lifes featuring glassware has always far exceeded the number of works that come onto the market. When I asked Henk why he is considered one of the finest glass painters, I received a matter-of-fact answer in the Groningen tradition: Painting glass has always come very easily to me. In this work, Helmantel paints a Roman pouring jug. The damage caused by centuries of the ground’s effect on the glass is rendered beautifully. The harmony, as well as the interplay, of the colours used creates a highly engaging atmosphere that does not quickly lose its appeal.
