Only a few works in private ownership are significant enough to be included in Henk's most important retrospective book, 'Henk Helmantel, a Lifetime of Painting and Collecting'. The still life with chessboard is one such work. There is much to see; every element is a Helmantel in itself, whether it concerns the medieval cooking pot, the famous red tin, the peelings bin, or the old box—they are all familiar objects. The chessboard draws attention with its beautiful layering and deep red color. All in all, a museum piece or a showpiece in a private collection.
