A surprising corner of Henk Helmantel's oeuvre consists of the churches in Scandinavia. Gotland, for instance, has a large number of medieval churches that inspired Henk. The church of Bäl dates from the early 13th century. Remarkable frescoes were only discovered in the church during restorations in the 21st century. The work featuring the South Wall is included in one of the largest private collections presented at the Icon Museum in Kampen.
