Anyone following the market for Helmantels will notice that remarkably few works featuring vegetables and fruit can be found, even though they represent the largest part of Henk's oeuvre. The reason is simple. The general public is familiar with the fruit still lifes, and whoever has managed to acquire one is not quick to part with it.

Within the category, this work featuring Sedeling apples is a standout. Henk uses vibrant colors, and the apples leap off the canvas. Through significant layering in the application of the paint, combined with the many colors, the apples acquire a thick skin, making it look as if you could pick them right off the canvas. Here, the Master Painter displays his skill at its best. The Sedeling is a delicious English apple. This rather flat apple is also known as the pancake apple.
